One of my latest favorite things is walking my son to and from school. It is so nice to have time to appreciate his growing up. He is becoming independent and has lots to say about the world. We talk a lot about weather, which seems to be the topic of many people’s conversations. Yet, talking about weather with a four-year-old is much more entertaining. Everything is amazing and wondrous at the age of four. What causes fog? Why is it just drizzling, but not raining? Why does the sun hide behind clouds? Why can you still see the moon in the morning? These are all questions that Gavin and I discuss on our walks together. It’s amusing and a bit challenging to come up with answers! It has been fun watching the leaves change colors and begin to fall from the trees. On today’s walk home, Gav gathered lots of leaves, pinecones, and acorns. We decided to make a treasure box for his Autumn collections. It was a quick and easy project, gave us something to do together, and now we don’t have random leaves scattered around the house!

It’s a pretty simple concept. Just have your child gather little pieces of nature- bright colored leaves, pinecones, acorns, sticks, etc. Take a card board box, cut the sides so the box opens up like a display. I found a box that was sent from amazon.com. I just had to glue a few of the pieces together so it would take the form I wanted. Then, have your child glue the leaves in place the way they want them. We used a hot glue gun for the acorns, stick, and pinecones (this is where the adult should assist). We left lots of room for future additions. We have many more walks to take before the end of Autumn!

So, it might not be a Picasso or something you’d see in a Pottery Barn catalog. But, trust me- your kid will think it’s AWESOME!

  • What a great idea! Gav looks so proud and it’s awesome he has a special place to keep and display his treasures. All the weather, sun and moon questions sound like good material for a children’s book!

  • This is really a great idea. Fun to share and lots of children and parents will benefit. Spending this time together and making a quality investment of time and effort will pay great dividends in the future as your family grows together. Oh, anad why can you still see the moon in the morning? 🙂
