Gardening often comes with surprises, but little did I know it would help teach my son math skills. Last weekend, I picked several yellow plum tomatoes and Gavin was having a blast counting them. We invented a little math game where he’d give me one to eat and then count how many were left. It began a great exercise in teaching basic addition and subtraction skills. I’d give him 3 tomatoes and he’d count them. Then I’d give him 1 more and he’d total them again. I’d take 2 away… you get the idea. It just goes to show you that we really do learn in all different ways. The best part is that my little guy didn’t even realize he was learning. He was just having fun playing with tomatoes. Now, if I could just get him to eat them…

  • This is awesome – what a fun way to teach and learn. Plus I’m sure he’ll retain it better using real life examples. Counting tomatoes should be included in the children’s book you’re going to write!
