Bright chair, happy garden
-
My husband and I often debate whether or not wood should be painted. He tends to lean towards appreciating the natural beauty of cedar or maple, and would argue for staining over painting. I am sure that in some cases, he is right. However, when I’m looking through gardening magazines or books, it’s not the cedar Adirondack chair that catches my eye; it’s the one painted in a lemony shade of yellow! I really love brightly painted furniture in the garden. It adds a bit of whimsy and intrigue. I had two sets of cedar chairs with side tables that I purchased years ago from a farm store. Originally, we stained them with a natural finish and they looked nice- just not very exciting. So, when the time came to refinish them- I decided to take it up a notch. I went to the hardware store and came home with a gallon of cherry red and a gallon of bubble gum blue! I also bought a can in a bright shade of green, to paint a couple of wooden planter boxes my neighbor gave me. I love how they all turned out, and feel like they really add something to my yard. If you have any old outdoor furniture, I encourage you to change up the look by painting an old chair with tangerine orange, or a planter box with a cool shade of purple. At the very least, go buy a bright colored watering pail! I think we all need a reminder from time to time that gardening is supposed to be FUN!
